BJP’s Central Election Committee (CEC) will meet for the second time next week to finalize the list of candidates for Goa, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh elections. In its first meeting on Thursday, the BJP CEC finalized candidates for the 172 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh that will go to polls in the first three phases.
Goa has already recommended the shortlisted names for approval to the party’s CEC and Uttarakhand will send the shortlisted names in a day or two. Whereas for Uttar Pradesh, several rounds of meetings have been held in Lucknow and the national capital. The BJP CEC meeting to finalize candidates for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections on Thursday was held in hybrid mode as party chief J. Some CEC members including P. Nadda were found to be Kovid-19 positive.
Sources said the next meeting of the BJP CEC is likely to be held in the middle of next week to finalize more candidates from Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Punjab and Uttarakhand. A party leader said, depending on the health of the CEC members, a decision will be taken to hold the meetings physically or in a hybrid form. Before Thursday, there was a lot of discussion and deliberation in the meetings chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Assembly elections will be held in Uttar Pradesh in seven phases in February-March starting from February 10, while Punjab, Goa and Uttarakhand will go to polls on February 14. Apart from this, elections will also be held in Manipur in two phases – February 27 and March 3.
Goa: BJP seeks workers’ opinion
Goa BJP has also taken the opinion of party workers while shortlisting the names of possible candidates. Party sources said the names have been shortlisted on the basis of feedback received from party workers and internal surveys conducted by the party to ascertain the popularity of ticket candidates among the public. It is learned that the Goa BJP unit has shortlisted names for 37 of the 40 assembly seats that will go to polls on February 14. The counting of votes will take place on March 10.
