World Boxing Championship: Nikhat Zareen creates history, getting applause all over the country

Sports, desk report. Last night was a very memorable night for Indian boxing as Nikhat Zareen won the gold medal at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul on Thursday, May 19, 2022. Nikhat won the gold medal in the flyweight (52kg) category by defeating Jitpong Jutamas of Thailand 5-0 in the final.

The 25-year-old boxer from Telangana defeated Jitpong Jutamas of Thailand without breaking a sweat in the 52kg final. In which the judges scored 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27, 29-28 in favor of Nikhat. Nikhat is only the fifth Indian woman after record six-time champion MC Mary Kom (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2018), Sarita Devi (2006), Jenny RL (2006), to win a gold at the World Boxing Championships.

It was also India’s first gold medal at the World Boxing Championships since Mary Kom won in 2018. Let us inform you that Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen won the gold medal at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship after registering a stunning 5-0 win in Istanbul yesterday. Nikhat defeated Jitpong Jutamas of Thailand without breaking a sweat in the 52kg final.

Apart from Nikhat, two Indian boxers Manisha Maun (57kg) and Parveen Hooda (63kg) have won bronze medals after the semi-finals in the championships. With this the Indian contingent ended its campaign in the world’s biggest boxing event with three medals. Which saw an exciting competition in the presence of a record 310 boxers from 73 countries. The sporting event also marked the 20th anniversary of the Women’s World Championships. India’s overall medal tally at the World Women’s Boxing Championships has gone up to 39, which includes 10 gold, eight silver and 21 bronze in 12 editions of the prestigious event.
